Google’s Street View service has landed the Web search giant in a Swiss court where they are now facing charges that their popular application is a violation of Switzerland’s privacy laws.
Street View provides a 360-degree view of any street level location, a tool that data protection commissioner Hanspeter Thuer said could produce images of individuals without their consent. Thuer has said Google has not done enough to ensure faces and license plates from vehicles were unrecognizable, a failure that could leave an individual in danger.
Perhaps most upsetting to Thuer is Street View’s ability to show people inside hospitals, prisons, schools and other sensitive locations.
Google has insisted that Street View was legal and they would fight to preserve the application. While it could still be months before the case makes it to court Thuer has asked that Google be forced to remove all pictures of Switzerland from the service and refrain from taking any more pictures until a ruling has been made.
