Harrison Barnes, ESPN’s top-ranked high school basketball player, committed to the North Carolina Tar Heels during a press conference on Friday.
Barnes utilized Skype to announce his college choice by contacting head coach Roy Williams from his high school gymnasium. “I just wanted to let you guys know that I will be joining you guys next fall,” Barnes said to Williams and the Tar Heels team.
Barnes, the 6-foot-7 small forward from Ames, IA, selected UNC over Duke, Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma and UCLA.
Barnes averaged 19.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game last season to lead Ames H.S. to a state championship, earning Gatorade State Player of the Year honors as a junior. In addition, he has earned a 3.5 grade point average.
Barnes is already considered the greatest high school player in state history. In such a small state on the basketball map, Barnes recognized this and actually thanked the media for covering him over the years, including the Des Moines Register, the Ames Tribune, Scout.com, Rivals.com and ESPN.
Barnes then signed his letter-of-intent to the University of North Carolina.
Barnes will join 6-4 point guard Kendall Marshall and 6-6 shooting guard Reggie Bullock, forming one of the nation’s top recruiting classes. Marshall and Bullock are ranked No. 13 and No. 19, respectively, in the ESPN100 rankings.
