The Warner Bros. epic “300” raked in $70 million at the box-office this weekend, far exceeding the combined total of the other nine movies in the top ten. The box-office results seem fitting for a movie that details the story of 300 Spartan soldiers fighting off an invading Persian force of a much larger size.
If the box-office numbers hold up, the $70 million will be the largest March debut ever. Last year’s “Ice Age: The Meltdown” brought in $68 million while playing in 850 more theaters. “300” has already set the record for IMAX theaters were it brought in $3.4 million on 62 screens.
Last week’s number one, the Disney release “Wild Hogs,” fell to number two but stayed strong with $28 million bringing its total to $77.4 million over two weekends.
Disney captured number three at the box-office as well with “Bridge to Terabithia” which brought in $6.9 million, bumping its total to $67 million over four weeks.
Nicholas Cage brought in the year’s first $100 million movie as “Ghost Rider” collected $6.8 million and brought the four week total to $104.1 million.”
