After winning 23 games last season New York Knicks owner James Nolan fired legendary head coach Larry Brown and replaced him with team president Isiah Thomas. In a candid message in front of the media Dolan handed the coaching reigns to Thomas and basically said ‘you got us into this mess, you get us out.’
But Dolan was kind enough to give Thomas one season to turnaround a team that lost nearly a quarter of their games. In fairness to Dolan, his only requirement for Thomas was “evident progress” and as subjective as that is, apparently the Hall of Famer met those requirements.
Dolan is expected to announce Thomas’ contract extension later today. With 19 games left in the regular season the Knicks are sitting at 29-34 and are clinging to the eighth and final spot in the NBA's Eastern Conference playoff race.
Last season the Knicks finished with the worst record in the Eastern Conference despite carrying one of the league’s highest payrolls.
