Manny Pacquiao Drops Miguel Cotto Twice, Lands 12th Round TKO for Welterweight Title

Manny Pacquiao earned a record seventh title in seven divisions on Saturday after dropping Miguel Cotto twice and eventually earning a 12th round TKO to capture the welterweight belt at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday night.

Just six months ago Pacquiao earned his biggest win of his career, jumping up in weight to flatten junior welterweight Ricky Hatton with a  knockout but Saturday’s win eclipsed that feat as the Filipino battered Cotto from the start of the fight.

Cotto went down for the first time in the third round as Pacquiao caught him with a powerful right. The Puerto Rican appeared to be getting his legs under him in the fourth and showed some offense but was then sent to the canvas with a left and he was never the same.

The rest of the fight the only question was how much blood Cotto would lose as Pacquiao continued to bruise his opponent with a series of combinations aided by superior speed and quickness.

Eventually the beating took its toll on Cotto and while he managed to convince his corner to start the 12th round referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight 55 seconds into the final frame after realizing there was nothing Cotto could do to stop Pacquiao.
