Kosovo is holding its first local elections since declaring independence from Serbia just over one year ago and while there has been strong opposition from the Serbian minority the government has insisted the process would be free and fair.
Despite the historical marker that the election represents it is believe only about 40 percent of the eligible voters will turn out at the polls. That could be due in large part to threats of violence by Serbs who opposed independence.
Sunday’s vote was being billed as “the most important since the proclamation of independence” by Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci who declared “We today confirm that our country has deserved to be independent and to have a European perspective.”
While Serbia has encouraged Kosovo Serbs to boycott the vote many local Serb politicians have said that call should be ignored.
