The New England Patriots have signed former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth to a multiyear contract. The signing provides Tom Brady with a legitimate deep threat on an offense that was lacking a big-time receiver.
The contract will give Stallworth a guaranteed $3.6 million next season but for the Patriots to retain him for the 2008 season they would have to pay him $11 million.
Stallworth finished last season with 725 yards receiving on 38 receptions and five touchdowns while averaging 19.1 yards per catch. The former number one pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2002, Stallworth missed four games last season.
The addition of Stallworth will take some pressure off Reche Caldwell, last year’s go-to guy for Tom Brady. Caldwell totaled 760 yards on 61 receptions last season and found the endzone four times.
