A group of gunmen disguised in Iraqi army uniforms launched an early morning attack on a village southwest of Baghdad, killing at least 12 people and leaving several more wounded.
According to officials the attack in Zauba was likely a result of a tribal dispute as many of the victims were tied to the Sunni militia Awakening Council. Among the dead was Attala Ouda al-Shukir, a leader of the Awakening Council, and three of his sons.
A senior figure in the Iraqi Islamic Party was also killed in the attack.
