U.S. President Barack Obama has encouraged China to extend individual rights to citizens, insisting certain freedoms were universal and should be made available to all.
Obama addressed the issue before an audience of Chinese students during a questions-and-answer session at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum on Monday. During one portion of the session Obama stated, “We do not seek to impose any system of government on any other nation, but we also don't believe that the principles we stand for are unique to our nation.”
The President went on to say, “These freedoms of expression and worship, of access to information and political participation - we believe are universal rights.”
While Obama tried to remain diplomatic about the issues and said the relationship between the U.S. and China was improving his comments regarding rights and freedoms was not popular with the country’s leadership.
Following the session, which included questions about Taiwan and his Nobel Peace Prize award, Obama flew to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintai for dinner. The two are scheduled to hold talks on Tuesday to discuss issues including trade and the nuclear programs of Iran and North Korea.
