Roy Bennett, a senior aide to Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and treasurer for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party, has pled not guilty to terrorism charges and insisted the accusations are politically motivated.
According to prosecutors Bennett was part of a plot to overthrow President Robert Mugabe between 2002 and 2006. Bennett was arrested in February for allegedly possessing illegal weapons, a move that many inside his party believe to be orchestrated by the ZANU-PF.
At the time of his arrest Bennett had been scheduled to be sworn in as deputy agriculture minister in the new unity government. That has been put on hold as Mugabe has refused to swear Bennett in while the case against him remains open.
The charges against Bennett have added more tension to the fragile unity government in Zimbabwe as Mugabe has clearly shown that he will make little in concessions to Tsvangirai and his MDC party.
