14.6% of Americans could not afford enough food in 2008 according to a report from the Department of Agriculture. 17 million households, up from 13 million in 2007 had difficulty obtaining enough food to eat at some point during the year.
At the start of the recession in 2007, 11.1% of households encountered problems securing food. By 2008 it increased by 3.5%, the highest numbers on record since the Department of Agriculture began keeping track in 1995.
At the close of 2008, the national unemployment rate was at 7.2%, now, edging in 2010, it’s at 10.2%, insuring numbers for 2009 are sure to be higher.
A tremendous amount of government aid has been put in place to ease joblessness and its consequences, from perpetually extended unemployment to welfare, and yet numbers remain on the rise.
