Viacom, the media conglomerate with several cable networks that include MTV, VH1, CMT, BET and Comedy Central along with Paramount Pictures and Famous Music, have filed a lawsuit against Google and its internet video-sharing site YouTube for more than $1 billion after the two sides could not come to terms with an agreement.
Viacom contends that they have had nearly 200,000 copyrighted clips of their material illegally uploaded onto YouTube and they have been viewed over 1.5 billion times.
Viacom released a statement saying “YouTube's strategy has been to avoid taking proactive steps to curtail the infringement on its site, their business model, which is based on building traffic and selling advertising off of unlicensed content, is clearly illegal and is in obvious conflict with copyright laws."
The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
