Despite calls from Washington to freeze the construction of further settlements in Jerusalem the Israeli interior ministry has approved some 900 planning applications for new housing units at the Jewish settlement of Gilo.
The decision to approve the applications will likely put any chance of peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians on hold. Palestinians have insisted they would not sit at the table with Israel as long as construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where Gilo is located, is halted.
According to Israel while Gilo is on land seized in 1967 it is part of Jerusalem, the Israeli capital, and it is within their right to build on that land. That right has been debated by the international community and under international law it is illegal to build settlements on occupied territory.
U.S. President Barack Obama had encouraged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to use “restraint” in settlement construction but Netanyahu has only agreed to use that restraint in respect to settlements in the West Bank.
