German Prosecutors Charge Former Nazi SS Member with 58 Killings

A former Nazi SS member known only as a “retiree from Duisburg” has been charged in the murders of 58 Jewish forced laborers more than 60 years ago.

According to prosecutors the 90-year-old suspect, along with accomplices, forced the Hungarian Jews into a forest outside the village of Deutsch Schuetzen in eastern Austria, forced them to kneel before a grave and then shot them in the back of the head.

The murders reportedly took place on March 29, 1945 as World War II was ending and the mass grave was eventually uncovered in 1995 by the Austrian Jewish association.

The accused man now has two weeks to present evidence in his defense or appeal the case before the court decides if the case should go forward.
