In Our Own Backyard: Families in Crisis - Connecticut – Mountainside Treatment Center, The Housatonic Youth Service Bureau and Sharon Hospital teamed up last night, November 16th, at Sharon Hospital and hosted a forum for more than 100 people on the topics of drug and alcohol abuse among teens in the community. Parents, teens and interested people from across the states of Connecticut and New York arrived in Sharon to voice their support for drug prevention efforts, learn more about the signs of drug and alcohol abuse and to ask experts from Mountainside Addiction Treatment Center questions on addiction and recovery.
Bruce Dechert, Mountainside’s Family Wellness Program Director, addressed the crowded room and discussed the affect addiction has on the whole family. Mr. Dechert runs Mountainside Holistic Drug Rehab’s Family Wellness Program, which focuses on understanding the disease of drug and alcohol abuse and how it impacts everyone in a family, and provides constructive problem resolution and continuing care for the whole family. Mary Marcuccio, founder and director of Parents 4 A Change and mother of a son who is a heroin addict, offered her personal perspective on how to watch for signs of drug use in the home. Her organization, a Southington-based parent support group focusing on opiate abuse among teens, has received statewide media attention for their proactive approach.
Much of the discussion centered on the appropriate degree of parental involvement in various aspects of the lives of teens in this ever changing world. Various issues at the center plate of many concerns were discussed including teen cell-phones, internet social sites, curfews, friends, and teen emails.
In addition, a highlight of the evening came in the form of a young recovering addict who entered treatment for addiction at Mountainside and is now in recovery. The individual spoke candidly to parents and teens about their personal and quick descent into drug addiction and the various warning signs that parents and teens could look for. Many questions were answered and the participants of the event left with a better understanding of addiction and a renewed commitment toward drug prevention.
