MLB News: Zach Greinke Wins AL Cy Young Award, Captures 25 of 28 First-Place Votes

Zach Greinke was named the American League Cy Young Award winner on Tuesday, collecting 25 of 28 first-place votes to easily out-total Felix Herndanez

While Greinke finished just 16-8 on the year he posted a major league best 2.16 ERA, finished with 242 strikeouts and was the lone bright spot on a Kansas City Royals team that finished 65-97 on the season. Steve Carlton is the only other pitcher to ever win the award on a worse team, his Philadelphia Phillies squad finished 59-97 in 1972 and he won 27 of those games.

While Greinke lost eight games the Royals scored just 13 runs in those contests and the 26-year-old right-hander had just 21 runs of support in nine no-decisions.

Hernandez put together a 19-5, 2.49 ERA campaign for the Seattle Mariners in finishing second in the AL Cy Young voting, collecting two first-place votes in the process. The Detroit Tigers Justin Verlander was the only other pitcher to pick up a first-place vote.
