U.S. President Barack Obama has admitted that his plan to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center has been delayed, recognizing that there are still questions concerning where to house the more than 200 prisoners currently held at the facility.
While Obama has made the closing of Guantanamo a focal point of his first year on office he has met resistance from many sides who have insisted that the detention center was the best place to keep suspected terrorists. That resistance has led to a delay that could push the closing back to late 2010, something Obama has accepted.
Obama admitted that the question surrounding where to move the detainees has been problematic but, that is not the lone issue causing the delay. The President said there are also technical problems associated with closing Guantanamo and until those issues are worked out the detention center would remain open.
