Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) was said to have approached AdMob Inc. in regards to an acquisition prior to the company's agreement with Google Inc., to be acquired for $750 million. According to people familiar with the matter, Apple approached AdMob a few weeks before Google's bid.

The interest in AdMob highlights the increasing competition in the mobile-phone market between Apple, and Google. Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt had resigned from the Board of Directors for Apple in July, after serving a three year term for them. Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, had said at the time that the move was necessary because Google was entering "more of Apple's core businesses."
AdMob and Google combined will be the largest holder in the mobile advertising market, with about 30-40% of the market.
