Finance World News Update by EQUITIES Magazine

Despite company studies that failed to meet certain goals, the Food and Drug Administration’s panel of vaccine experts voted 10-1 in favor of Pfizer’s Prevnar 13 to protect against pneumococcal disease.

The federal health experts say that the updated version of Pfizer’s best-selling anti-infection vaccine is safe and effective for infants and toddlers. The new vaccine decreases risk of infection from thirteen varieties of the disease, which annually causes thousands of ear infections, meningitis and pneumonia. The updated version adds protection against six more strains to the seven covered by the current vaccine.

According to the FDA, new strains account for over 60 percent of U.S. pneumococcal cases in children younger than 5.
