Thanksgiving Day travel is expected to increase by 1.4 percent from last year according to AAA Alabama. 38.4 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles over the upcoming holiday weekend, up from 37.8 million in 2008. The number of people traveling by car will also climb to 33.2 million, up 2.1 percent.
News that fewer people have chosen to travel by plane comes as no surprise, with a slew of airlines posting losses of late. Air travel is anticipated to fall to 2.3 million as compared with 2.5 million last year. That’s a 6.7 percent loss to already ailing airlines.
Individuals pursuing other modes of transportation to spend Thanksgiving day with faraway friends and family is also on the rise, up 1.2 percent to 2.9 million this year. “Other” includes trains, buses and water travel.
These developments bode well for the travel industry which experienced devastating, 25.2 percent losses in 2008.
