A 15-year-old Missouri girl identified as Alyssa Bustamante will stand trial as an adult in the murder of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten. In a hearing on November 18, Cole County judge Jon Beetem ruled Bustamante would be tried as an adult because of the vicious nature of the crime.
Bustamante, who was shackled and wore an orange jumpsuit, showed no emotion as Beetem announced his ruling. The Jefferson City High School student is accused of murdering Olten on October 21 and dumping her body in woods near the girl’s home.
Police testified that Bustamante led them to Olten’s body in the woods. She told authorities she murdered Olten “because she wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone.”
Bustamante, who has attempted suicide in the past, is being held without bond on first-degree murder charges. The grand jury indictment accuses her of killing Olten by strangling and stabbing her.
If convicted, Bustamante faces life in prison.
