Hamid Karzai has begun his second term as president of Afghanistan and as part of his inaugural speech the recently elected leader called for Afghan troops to take charge of the country within the next five years.
Karzai also promised to put into practice methods that would eliminate corruption as well as instill peace in the often violent country.
While Karzai has pledged to tackle corruption there are many who accused him of using such methods to earn a second term in office. Despite his detractors Karzai said his election win was free and fair and promised to move the country forward.
Part of that move would be in ensuring Afghan troops led the charge in securing the country and fighting insurgents. Karzai stressed the importance of strengthening the capabilities of the Afghan forces while reducing the reliance on foreign troops.
Thursday’s speech was attended by several dignitaries including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari. Commenting after the speech Clinton told the BBC “It was clear today in the speech that the president has a vision of where he wants to lead the country, and it was reassuring to people, it was exciting because it was such a statement of resolve.”
While Clinton praised Karzai’s speech she remained a bit hesitant stating, “But the proof is in the pudding. Now we've got to get to work and make it happen - he knows that, his ministers know that.”
