A gunman wearing a fake beard entered a NYC pizzeria in Greenwich Village on Thursday evening and fatally shot an employee and then shot and killed two unarmed volunteer police officers before being shot and killed by officers responding to the scene.
The gunman, identified as David Gavin, 32, opened fire on Alfredo Romaro after the pizzeria employee turned his back. After unloading fifteen rounds in the restaurant, Gavin fled out the door where he encountered the two unarmed volunteer police officers, Nicholas Todd Pekearo, 28, and Eugene Marshalik, 19. Gavin shot and killed both men with a 9mm semiautomatic pistol.
Police arriving on the scene were involved in a shootout with Gavin, eventually killing the gunman. Investigators have yet to uncover a motive for the shooting.
Both Pekearo and Marshalik will receive full police honors at their funeral.
