San Francisco Giants fireballer Tim Lincecum has collected his second straight National League Cy Young Award, narrowly beating the dynamic duo of Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright from the St. Louis Cardinals.
Lincecum earned 11 first-place votes and totaled 100 points while Carpenter picked up 9 first-place votes and 94 points and Wainwright had 12 first-place votes and 90 points.
Voters were impressed by Lincecum’s 261 strikeouts and 2.48 ERA, ignoring his less than glamorous 15-7 record. That mirrored the American League Cy Young outcome in which Royals righty Zach Greinke took top honors despite a 16-8 record.
In finishing third Wainwright became just the second pitcher to collect the most first-place votes yet not win the Cy Young award. He did however win a Gold Glove earlier this month.
