Belgian Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy Selected as First Permanent European Council President

Belgian Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy has been selected as the first permanent European Council President after receiving unanimous backing by the 27 EU leaders.

The position was born out of the Lisbon Treaty which was signed in December 2007 and designed to change the workings of the European Union. It is scheduled to go into effect on December 1, 2009.

Van Rompuy became a front-runner for the post after receiving strong backing from the French and Germans who lauded the Belgian prime minister for his ability to build coalitions among differing parties, specifically in Belgium where he essentially steered the country out of a governmental crisis.

As part of his new position van Rompuy will serve a two-and-a-half-year term and can be re-elected once. He will chair EU summits and is responsible for pushing forward the work of the EU Council of Ministers as well as act as representative of the EU on a global stage.
