The number four seeded Maryland Terrapins used a late second half surge to power their way past the number thirteen seeded Davidson Wildcats 82-70 to advance in the NCAA Tournament.
Maryland had six players score in double figures to lead a balanced attack that sealed the victory by hitting seven of eight free-throws in the final 1:09. While the Terrapins pulled of the win the Wildcats proved to be a tough task.
Davidson was up by as many as eight in the second half before Maryland ran off eight straight points to tie the score 52-52. Maryland then pounded the ball down low for easy baskets while Davidson was forced to shoot from the perimeter and couldn’t find the bottom of the bucket.
In the end it was Maryland’s size that halted the Davidson upset bid. The Terrapins grabbed 54 rebounds compared to the 35 pulled down by the Wildcats
D.J. Strawberry scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, Mike Jones finished with 17 points and 6 boards and Ekene Ibekwe added 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
Stephen Curry led Davidson with 30 points while putting up 14 three-point attempts in the game. Davidson attempted 35 three-pointers while Maryland shot just 18 from that distance.
