The British couple kidnapped by Somali pirates last month has said they fear they will be killed within a week if their captors are not provided a ransom.
Pirates kidnapped Paul and Rachel Chandler on October 23 as the couple were sailing in their yacht in the Indian Ocean. Shortly after the kidnapping pirates issued a demand of $7 million for their safe return yet those demands have gone unanswered.
On Friday a video of the couple was released in which they stated “they will not hesitate to kill us, perhaps within a week” if a ransom is not paid. Paul Chandler is heard saying they had been treated adequately up to this point but “Mentally we are under great stress and threatened. Our kidnappers are losing patience. They are concerned that there has been no response at all to their demands for money.”
The couple then made a desperate appeal for help saying, “we ask the government and the people of Britain and our family, to do whatever they can to enter into negotiations with these people to buy back our lives.”
According to the British government there would be no ransom negotiations, insisting they would not make concessions with hostage takers.
