Just when things were looking down for the number seven seeded UNLV Rebels the number ten seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets melted under the pressure resulting in a 67-63 victory for the Las Vegas school.
With the score tied 59-59 with 1:40 remaining the Yellow Jackets had a perfect opportunity to get past their higher seeded opponent but suffered a complete mental collapse and handed the game to UNLV. Allowing the Rebels three offensive rebounds on the same possession UNLV finally converted and went up two, Tech then got hit with a five-second call and turned the ball over. The Rebels then came down the floor and missed two shots but grabbed offensive rebounds each time and made their way to the line.
It was the free-throw line that made the difference. UNLV hit 77 percent from the line while Tech was an awful 58 percent.
Wendell White and Michael Umeh each scored 19 points for the Rebels who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
