Blast at Chinese Coal Mine Kills at least 42, More than 60 Miners Remain Trapped

At least 42 miners have been killed and as many as 66 more left trapped after a gas explosion at the state-owned Heilongjiang Longmei Mining Holding Group coal mine in China’s Heilongjiang province.

According to reports there were 528 workers in the mine when the explosion occurred but more than 400 managed to escape. Search crews are now trying to reach the remaining miners believed to be trapped about a third of a mile underground.

While the Chinese government has implemented tougher safety regulations and attempted to shutdown smaller mines the country still has one of the worst accident records in the world. There has been no report on what caused Sunday’s deadly blast but it is common for mining companies to skirt safety regulations to drive profits and meet high demands for fuel.
