The number eleven seeded Winthrop Eagles built a 20-point lead in the second half and survived a six minute scoreless streak to beat the number six seeded Notre Dame Irish 74-64 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Both teams were awful from the foul-line but the Irish were just 3-13 from the charity stripe a stat that sealed their early exit.
Craig Bradshaw scored 26 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while Torrell Martin added 20 points and 11 boards to give the Winthrop Eagles their first NCAA Tournament win in school history.
Notre Dame trailed 54-34 in the second half but rallied to take the lead 63-62 with just over two minutes remaining in the game. But over the final two minutes the Eagles outscored Notre Dame 8-1 to grab the win.
Winthrop will now play the winner of the Oregon/Miami (Ohio) game in the second round.
