The number seven seeded Nevada Wolf Pack had to play without their star Nick Fazekas for more than three minutes in overtime but managed to knock off the number ten seeded Creighton Blue Jays 77-71 in overtime to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Nevada and Creighton traded buckets throughout the first half with neither team building a lead larger than five points, an advantage both teams held at one point. By the end of the half it was Creighton who headed to their locker room with a 32-31 lead.
The second half was much the same as neither team could make a strong run and put the other away. Creighton was up 59-55 with 3:37 remaining but the Wolf Pack scored the final two buckets on jumpers from Marcelus Kemp and Fazekas to force overtime.
Fazekas picked up his fifth foul with 3:10 to play in the overtime period but Kemp wouldn’t let Nevada fold as he scored seven in the frame to get the win.
Kemp finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead Nevada while Fazekas added 17 and 9. Nevada was solid from the free-throw line as well hitting 82 percent from the stripe.
The Wolf Pack will now face the Memphis Tigers in the second round.
