Death Toll from Chinese Coal Mine Explosion Tops 90, at least 16 Still Missing

A gas explosion at the state-owned Heilongjiang Longmei Mining Holding Group coal mine in China’s Hegang City in Heilongjiang province has left at least 92 people dead while another 16 miners remain missing.

Reports suggested more than 500 workers were in the mine when the explosion occurred early Saturday morning. While several hundred managed to escape many more were left trapped deep in the mine and rescue efforts have concentrated on trying to reach those miners.

Those efforts have been slowed by collapsed tunnels inside the mine as well as dense gas, making any attempt extremely dangerous. There have reportedly been no rescues since early Sunday morning and hopes of finding any more alive have dimmed.

While there has been no official report on what caused the explosion it is believed a build-up of gas is what ignited the mine.
