When Charlie Weiss was hired as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish head football coach five years ago he said a 6-5 record wasn’t good enough. Not good enough for the school and not good enough for him.
After Saturday’s overtime loss to Connecticut the Irish dropped to 6-5 on the season and with a potent Stanford Cardinal still on their schedule Notre Dame could be looking at a 6-6 mark, something that could seal the fate of Weis.
Entering the season Weiss was already under fire as the Irish have failed to return to national prominence yet there was plenty of optimism with a number of key returning players and what appeared to be a favorable schedule. Things haven’t worked out the way Weis wanted and now his job appears to be all but gone.
Weis has said he would not resign as head coach but also said it would be difficult for him to argue if the school decided to let him go. That decision won’t be made until after the Stanford game but even a win next Saturday probably isn’t enough to keep him on the sideline next year.
