NFL Scores: Matt Stafford Tosses Five TDs as Detroit Lions Pick Up Last Second Win Over Cleveland Browns

Matt Stafford was 26/43 for 422 yards and five touchdowns, Calvin Johnson had seven receptions for 161 yards and a TD and Kevin Smith finished with 104 yards receiving and a score but it was a one-yard touchdown reception by Brandon Pettigrew with time expiring that gave the Detroit Lions (2-8) a 38-37 victory over the Cleveland Browns (1-9) on Sunday.

The first quarter was dominated by Brady Quinn and the Cleveland Browns as the signal caller broke a 3-3 tie when he hooked up with Mohamed Massaquoi on a 59-yard touchdown toss to grab a 10-3 lead. That was extended to 17-3 when Quinn found Chansi Stuckey on a 40-yard touchdown pass and followed that with a 4-yard toss to Joshua Cribbs and the Browns were cruising 24-3. That’s when Stafford got going though and the number one pick in the 2009 NFL Draft proved his worth as he hit Aaron Brown on a 26-yard strike and it was 24-10 heading into the second quarter.

Stafford then found Kevin Smith on a 25-yard touchdown early in the second to get the Lions within 24-17 and then tied the score at 24-24 with a 75-yard touchdown bomb to Calvin Johnson. Phil Dawson managed to stop the bleeding with a 29-yard field goal and the Browns went into the half in front 27-24.

Detroit grabbed their first lead of the game late in the third when Stafford hit Will Heller on a one-yard touchdown pass but the Browns got two of those points back on a safety and they went into the final frame trailing 31-29.

Quinn put the browns back in front 37-31 when he hooked up with Michael Gaines on a 2-yard touchdown and then Jamal Lewis ran in a two-point conversion. It looked as if the Browns would hold on for the win as Stafford was forced to heave a desperation bomb at the end of the game but Cleveland was called for pass interference in the endzone, giving the Lions one more shot from the one-yard line. That’s when Stafford found Pettigrew on the game-winning one-yard toss and gave Detroit their second home win of the season.
