NCAA Tournament Scores: UCLA Survives Awful Shooting Night to Beat Indiana

Despite shooting 36 percent from the field, the number two seeded UCLA Bruins were able to get past the number seven seeded Indiana Hoosiers 54-49 and advance to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament.

The Bruins were fortunate enough to be playing a Hoosiers team that was suffering from the same shooting woes. Indiana managed to sink just 32 percent of their shots.

Both teams were awful in the first half as Indiana missed their first five shots but UCLA was only able to manage a 6-0 advantage. After going up 6-0 the Bruins went 5:40 without scoring another point but the Hoosiers could manage just seven points in that same space of time.

Indiana hit just five field goals in the first half; four of those field goals were inside the paint. UCLA wasn’t much better with seven field goals, five of which came from inside the paint. When both teams went to the locker room it was the Bruins who held a 20-13 lead.

The Bruins opened the second half with seven straight points and jumped to a 27-13 lead.  UCLA was up by 13 as late as 5:27 in the game but then went 3:25 without a point and Indian had cut their deficit to three.

When Indiana’s Earl Calloway scored on a layup with 1:01 left on the clock the score was tied 49-49 and it looked as if the Bruins were in trouble but Aaron Afflalo hit a pair of free-throws and Darren Collison did the same and the Bruins held the Hoosiers scoreless over the last minute to get the win.

Indiana shot themselves in the foot, hitting just 10-21 from the free-throw line. The Bruins were able to knock down 18-24 from the charity stripe.
