News Corp media mogul, Rupert Murdoch has threatened to remove his newspapers' content from Google and provide indexing capabilities exclusively to Microsoft Bing. The move is thought to be motivated by advertising sales losses endured as a result of the switch to digital. Financing his content is an expensive endeavor and Murdoch is seeking out new ways to afford it where inexpensive online ads are falling short.
While some newspapers choose to create content available to paying subscribers only and others offer to run ads camouflaged as content, Murdoch has another idea. As the primary arbiter in news, Murdoch has the benefit of individuals actively seeking out his content. If it was not on google, he would lose traffic, but he would make up for losses by having Bing pay him for it.
Some media experts have lampooned the idea as suicide while others recognize that internet traffic is not enough to save ailing news organizations. Publishers are going bankrupt left and right unable to fill the financial void dying with print. Ad sales online are simply not as profitable as those in newspapers and no amount of traffic is able to resurrect the dying papers. With this in mind, Murdoch is looking elsewhere, outside of advertisers, to fund his empire, and what he has found could either be suicide or the future of news.
