Romanian Presidential Election Run-Off Expected after First Round Produces No Outright Winner

None of the 12 candidates seeking the presidency of Romania managed to capture an outright victory in Sunday’s polling and as a result the election is expected to head to a run-off.

President Traian Basescu was said to have secured about a third of the votes after three quarters of the ballots were counted while his main rival, Social Democrat Mircea Geoana, was trailing him by three percent.

Romania has been run by a caretaker government since October following the fall of PM Emil Boc’s center-right government. That collapse has left Romania in a political crisis and led the IMF to delay payment of its bail-out loan designed to pull the country from its current recession.

The run-off, which would involve the center-right Basescu and Geoana, is scheduled for December 6
