Drunk Driving Arrests

Drunk driving doesn’t just happen to alcoholics. What’s next after you get pulled over?

Drunk driving doesn’t just happen to alcoholics. What’s next after you get pulled over?

It’s not just alcoholics who drive drunk. Anyone can exercise bad judgment and get behind the wheel after a few drinks. In California alone there are more than 175,000 DUI arrests per year.

While it’s true that individuals struggling with a drinking problem are more prone to get behind the wheel regularly while intoxicated (the law of averages applies here), someone who simply has a few drinks with friends and then tries to drive home is also putting themselves and others at risk.

They may be two different groups, but when that cop car pulls them over, the officer doesn’t see any difference – and neither does the law. Anyone with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit is viewed the same.

Once arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) – whatever the local law enforcement calls it, the charge is the same – and everyone in this situation needs the same thing: Help.

First Time DUI Offenders

For first-time offenders who genuinely don’t have a drinking problem but simply exercised very poor judgment, you have the benefit of being at a low risk to reoffend. That can work in your favor and make you a good candidate for alternative sentencing. Alternative sentencing involves working with you to get counseling instead of jail time for substance-related offenses. For those who realize that their arrest is part of a larger drinking problem, pursuing professional alcohol rehab is definitely the right next step.
