NCAA Tournament Scores: Oregon Ducks Shake off Slow Start to Beat Winthrop

The number three seeded Oregon Ducks hung with the number eleven seeded Winthrop Eagles in the opening 15 minutes of the first half and when the Eagles went cold the Ducks blasted past them for a 66-48 win and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament.

Winthrop looked good early and it appeared as if their perimeter game would present problems for the Ducks but when the Eagles went cold Oregon couldn’t be stopped. Winthrop scored just two points in the final 5:43 of the first half as Oregon closed with a 10-2 run and led at the break 33-29.

Oregon then opened the second with a 15-5 sprint and effectively knocked the Eagles out of the game. Winthrop was never able to get their perimeter game going in the second half and finished the game just 8-31 from beyond the arc and shot 39 percent from the floor.

Aaron Brooks led the Ducks with 22 points, 15 coming from three-point range. Oregon will now face off against UNLV in the Sweet Sixteen.
