China Executes Two People For Roles In Tainted Milk Deaths

Finance World News Update by EQUITIES Magazine

This morning, Chinese courts executed a dairy farmer and a milk salesman for their roles in the sale of contaminated baby formula. The severity of the punishments, Beijing hopes, will calm the public outcry and put an end to one of its worst food safety crises.

While another 19 people were convicted for the scheme to boost profits by lacing milk powder with the industrial chemical melamine, only the two men were put to death. In the wake of the scandal, at least six children died from drinking the adulterated formula and over 300,000 were made sick.

Melamine, used in the manufacture of plastics and fertilizer, has also been found added to pet food, eggs and fish feed, although not in levels considered dangerous to people. The chemical, with a high amount of nitrogen similar to protein, can fool inspectors easily. It can cause kidney failure and kidney stones.
