Libel Trial Involving Former Polish President Lech Walesa Begins

The court case involving former Polish President Lech Walesa and current President Lech Kaczynski has gotten underway in Warsaw but a judge ruled to adjourn the trial until December 18 to allow more time for preparation.

Walesa is seeking a retraction of a claim made by Kaczynski in which he stated the former Solidarity leader had been a spy for the communist secret service in the 1970s, a claim Walesa has firmly denied. Now Walesa is seeking nearly $36,000 in damages.

Charges that Walesa had been a spy were proven untrue by a special court in 2000 after it was determined that former SB security service agents had forged documents that made it appear as if he had been working for the communist party.
