Famed film director Roman Polanski may enjoy limited freedom soon after a Swiss court accepted his plea to be freed on bail prior to the country making a decision on his fate.
As it stands Switzerland is still considering an extradition request made by the United States. Polanski has been a fugitive from the law since 1978 after he fled the U.S. prior to being sentenced for engaging in unlawful sex a 13-year-old girl.
Polanski pled guilty to those charges but managed to escape to France before sentencing. His citizenship in France has prevented the country from extraditing him back to the U.S, but earlier this year he was detained by Swiss authorities as he arrived in Zurich to accept a lifetime achievement award at a film festival.
Swiss authorities said they had been acting on an international arrest warrant issued by the U.S. and where within their rights to detain the film-maker. Polanski has been jailed since September but could now be released and kept under house arrest at his Swiss chalet while the government continues to assess whether they will send him to the U.S.
