Gunmen in northern Mali have kidnapped a French national and authorities are now blaming a North African branch of al-Qaeda who are suspected in a string of abductions involving foreigners.
Officials have said the unidentified man was kidnapped on Wednesday while conducting research on malaria near the border Mali shares with Niger. He was reportedly taken by three armed men.
The UK has warned nationals to avoid visiting northern Mali because of the recent string of abductions. Many of those abductions involve a ransom but it is unknown if the recent kidnappers have made any such demands.
