Local Mayor Held in Brutal Philippines Massacre that Left 57 Dead

Authorities in the Philippines have said the man they believe responsible for orchestrating the brutal massacre of 57 people is now in custody and will face multiple murder charges.

According to reports Andal Ampatuan Jr., a local mayor in the southern town of Datu Unsay in Maguindanao province, turned himself in to authorities but has denied any involvement in Monday’s slaughter.

Prosecutors have argued that Ampatuan Jr. organized the massacre in which a convoy carrying journalists and rival politicians was ambushed. All passengers were taken to a remote hill region and shot at close range before being dumped in shallow graves.

The convoy had been carrying passengers loyal to rival politician Ismael Mangudadatu as well as a number of journalists who were traveling to witness his registration as an election candidate. Mangudadatu has said his wife and two sisters were among those killed and he has already blamed Ampatuan Jr. for the attack.
