UN Nuclear Watchdog Condemns Iran Over Development Uranium Enrichment Site

The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, has passed a resolution condemning Iran’s development of a uranium enrichment site and demanded the country halt its project immediately or face further sanctions.

Iran has insisted that their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only but several countries have voiced concern that they were attempting to develop nuclear weapons. Those concerns seemed to gain further validation in September when it was discovered that Iran had a second uranium enrichment facility near the town of Qom.

The discovery of that second facility quickly led to demands that Iran ship its low-enriched uranium overseas for processing into fuel as a means of ensuring they did not develop that uranium for nuclear weapons. Iran has been reluctant to agree to the deal which has further angered the UN.

That anger showed in a resolution that passed 25-3 demanding that Iran reveal the purpose of its second facility and confirm that there were no other facilities in the country. The only three countries voting against the resolution were Cuba, Malaysia and Venezuela.
