2009 Holiday Season - Seeing a rise in Domestic Violence, Alcoholism, and Drug Addiction

Joanna Painton, mental health, and addiction treatment health educator for Lakeview health System - a leading drug and alcohol rehab facility has experienced firsthand this holiday season people needing help.  Domestic violence is on the rise with the current economic climate at an all-time low.  The additional stress from the holiday season coupled with alcoholism and drug addiction has shown an increase in domestic violence.  Family and friends concerned for the health and safety of everyone involved are seeking addiction treatment options.

“Alcoholism and drug addiction has increased more people are turning to alcohol and drugs as a way to handle stress.  People are feeling a loss of control due to outside circumstances such as job loss, and pay cuts.  This stress is creating havoc in the family, marriages, children, and fellow people within the community everyone is experiencing stressors.  Unfortunately, when alcohol and drugs are involved emotions and anger seem to escalate and domestic violence is the end result.”

Holiday’s are notorious for people experiencing periods of depression, anxiety, and additional stress.  This year with the current economics many more people are experiencing
depression and anxiety combined with substance abuse addiction the stress is too much too bear and domestic violence has increased.  There is an overwhelming state of hopelessness at the present circumstances, and many feel it will never turn around.

Lakeview Health Systems which provides state of the art addiction treatment, are in contact with alumni who are experiencing joy and gratitude this year to be clean and sober for Thanksgiving.  They remember what it was like when they were caught up in
alcoholism and drug addiction.  That was a full-time job in itself, the hopelessness they experienced has been removed after completing treatment.  He or she may have lost a job or have extra stress yet they have learned a new way of living life without a drink or a drug.

This is the message of hope a recovering person can bring to the next person needing help.  The best gift he or she can give themselves and his or her loved ones is the gift of i
npatient addiction treatment program.  Lakeview Health Systems program treats the whole-person the issues specific to the individual are addressed one-on-one as well in a group setting.  Alcoholism, drug addiction and domestic violence are all learned behaviors; inpatient treatment program provides new coping mechanisms and teaches new healthy expressions rather than self destructive.

An intake coordinator is ready to assist with the process of admission whether private health insurance, self-pay or other available resources.  Learning how to live life without depending on a substance as part of daily survival is the best gift one can give his or her family.  Individuals who are proactive in their recovery will receive the benefit’s call 1-866-657-4357!
