College Football Scores: Alabama Crimson Tide Keep National Title Hopes Alive with Dramatic Win Over Auburn Tigers

Greg McElroy was 21/31 passing for 218 yards and two touchdowns, Julio Jones had 83 yards receiving on nine catches and Roy Upchurch had a pair of receptions including the game-winning 4-yard touchdown that lifted the #2 Alabama Crimson Tide (12-0) past the Auburn Tigers (7-5) 26-21 on Friday.

Auburn jumped to a stunning 14-0 lead in the opening frame as Terrell Zachery put the Tigers in front with a 67-yard touchdown run and Chris Todd followed that up with a one-yard TD toss to Eric Smith.

The Tide were able to regroup in the second quarter though as Trent Richardson cut Alabama’s deficit in half with a 2-yard touchdown run and Greg McElroy pulled his team even when he found Colin Peek on a 33-yard TD toss.

Auburn reclaimed the lead in the third quarter when Todd hit Darvin Adams on a 72-yard strike down the sideline but Alabama managed to put a pair of Leigh Tiffin field goals on the board to put the score at 21-20 heading into the fourth.

The final frame was dominated by a lengthy drive orchestrated by the Alabama offense as McElroy led a 15-play drive that chewed up 7:03 and ended with a 4-yard go-ahead TD toss to Upchurch with 1:24 left on the clock. Auburn managed to cross midfield and had one last attempt to win the game but Todd’s final heave was batted down and the Crimson Tide preserved their perfect season.

Alabama will meet the #1 Florida Gators next week in the SEC Championship with the winner almost guaranteed a spot in the BCS national championship game.
