Presidential elections are now underway in Honduras as voters have taken to the polls to end the political stalemate that has existed for the last five months.
While the country has been dealing the crisis of an ousted president in Manuel Zelaya and the controversial interim presidency of Roberto Micheletti neither of those men are candidates in Sunday’s election.
Zelaya was removed from office at gunpoint in June following a Supreme Court ruling that he violated the country’s constitution. He was replaced by Micheletti who refused international calls to restore Zelaya to office, insisting the country was acting within its rights when the former president was ousted.
Zelaya narrowly won the presidential election in 2005 when he edged Porfirio Lobo of the National Party and it is Lobo who is favored to win Sunday’s elections. His closest rival is expected to be Elvin Santos, a former vice president of Zelaya in the Liberal Party.
