With Matt Ryan sidelined due to a foot injury and Michael Turner suffering a re-injury to his ankle the Atlanta Falcons (6-5) turned to Chris Redman to keep their season alive and the backup quarterback did just that, leading the team to a dramatic 20-17 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-10) on Sunday.
After a scoreless first quarter the Falcons build a 10-0 lead in the second frame as Jason Elam kicked a 45-yard field goal and Redman tossed a shovel pass to Jerious Norwood who went 22-yards for a touchdown. Tampa responded to the Atlanta TD with a quick strike offense as Josh Freeman found Antonio Bryant on a 42-yard strike to pull to within 10-7 and then Connor Barth evened the game with 20 seconds before the half when he kicked a 39-yard field goal.
The Bucs grabbed their first lead of the game in the third quarter when Freeman found Cadillac Williams on an 8-yard touchdown pass but Elam managed to split the uprights one more time for the Falcons and Atlanta went into the fourth trailing 17-13. That lead held and it looked like Tampa would catch a break when Elam missed a 43-yard field goal but the Bucs missed a field goal of their own as Barth’s 51-yarder went wide left, giving Atlanta one more shot with just over two minutes left.
Staring on their own 41-yard-line Redman moved the Falcons down to the Tampa 10-yard-line and on third and ten Atlanta caught a break when the Bucs were called for holding. With a first and goal from the five-yard-line Redman tossed three straight incompletions but on fourth down he found Roddy White on a slant for the game-winner with 23 seconds left in the game.
