On Sunday, September 15, 2009, in a moving and patriotic half-time ceremony, the Washington Redskins football team paid a special tribute to the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Standing on the 50-yard line, U.S. Air Force Vice Chief of Staff, General Howie Chandler was assisted by four members of the MOPH as he presented the Purple Heart medal to two young airmen who were wounded while serving in Iraq.
MSgt Curtis Jamison was wounded on June 22, 2005 while serving at Camp Victory in Baghdad, Iraq. He is currently assigned to the White House Military Office. TSgt Naeem Stanley was wounded on February 12, 2005 while serving in Mosul, Iraq. He is currently assigned to Andrews AFB, Maryland.
At the invitation of the Redskins, the Military Order of the Purple Heart was represented by Department of Maryland Commander James Hauser and Department Adjutant Charles Eggleston. Also invited were Deputy National Service Director Jim Richards, and National Public Relations Director John Bircher. In addition to receiving the Purple Heart, each recipient was presented with a life membership in the MOPH and a Purple Heart Challenge Coin. General Chandler was presented with a “Commander’s Coin” from National Commander Jim Sims.
Earlier in the week, Jim Richards and Jim Magruder, Deputy Executive Director of the MOPH Service Foundation visited Walter Reed Medical Center to visit with as many wounded warriors in recovery as possible. They were joined by Redskins players Shaun Suisham and Sam Paulescu, as well as two of the Redskins’ cheerleaders, Barb Beach and Stephanie Hettchen. Following the visit, Jim Richards was interviewed by ESPN 980, the Washington Redskins Radio Network, about their visit to Walter Reed. He also explained to their listeners about the mission and goals of MOPH and how the organization helps veterans thru its National Service Program and other Americanism, VA Voluntary Services, and First Responder Programs.
Before and after the half-time ceremony, all of the participants, including 39 wounded warriors from Walter Reed, were invited to view the game from special box suites as the guests of the ESPN 980 radio station, the home of the Washington Redskins.
